Rwandan Reggae Legend Natty Dread Passes Away at 61
The Rwandan music industry is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic figures, Natty Dread, who passed away on the night of June 13, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. Widely known for his powerful and uplifting reggae tracks such as Hobe Rwanda, Gigi, and Holly Nation, Natty Dread carved a unique legacy in Rwanda's music history.
Born in 1964, Natty Dread was 61 years old at the time of his passing. He leaves behind seven children, whom he had with four different partners. Despite his personal journey marked by its own complexities, Natty Dread remained a devoted father and an inspiration to many.
His music career began in 1990, and over the decades, Natty Dread performed in more than 250 concerts across various countries, including his homeland, Rwanda. His message of unity, hope, and resilience resonated with fans far beyond Rwanda’s borders, earning him admiration across the African continent and beyond.
Natty Dread’s final days were spent in Germany, where he had been receiving treatment at the Hamburg-Eppendorf University Medical Center (UKE). His death marks the end of an era for Rwandan reggae, but his music will continue to inspire generations to come.
Rest in power, Natty Dread. Your voice may be silent, but your rhythm lives on.
